FAQ
What is Raw Honey?
Raw honey is sourced straight from the beehive, and is one of nature’s superfoods. Rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients, raw honey also contains live digestive enzymes, local pollens, propolis, amino acids, vitamins and minerals and probiotics.
At Life of a Beekeeper we don’t pasteurise, heat or process our honey. As a result our honey retains all its goodness, just as nature intended.
What is Crystallisation and Why Does Honey Set?
For some reason, there is a perception that honey that crystallises has “gone bad”. In fact, crystallisation is actually a sign of good quality honey. Honey is a supersaturated solution of two sugars: glucose and fructose. Since honey is supersaturated, crystallisation is a natural chemical process. In the cooler months, honey can even crystallise when it’s still in the hive.
What Do I Do When my Honey Crystallises?
You can eat honey as is or if you would like to liquify your honey to its original state, simply pop the glass jar into a pan of warm (not boiling) water for about 15 minutes. It’s that simple!
Does Honey Have an Expiry Date?
Officially for food standards honey needs an expiry date, however honey lasts forever as long as you store it properly. The reason why honey doesn’t have an expiry date is because of its high sugar and low water content.
How Should I Store my Honey?
Honey is best stored at room temperature. Make sure that your lid is tightly sealed, as honey tends to absorb odours and moisture.
What Flowers are in your Honey?
Wild Thyme from the herbaceous mountains of Kythira, along with small percentages of wild herbs and wildflowers such as sage, dandelion, rock samphire, cypress, eucalyptus, pine and St John's wart - just to name a few.
Where is Kythira Located and Where are Your Bees Located in Kythira?
Kythira is a tiny Greek island located opposite the south-eastern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula and directly above the island of Crete. Our honey is collected from the village of Kalamos, an area in the south of Kythira.
What Makes your Honey Unique?
Like coffee, chocolate and wine, time and place affect the flavour, texture and colour of honey, giving it its unique character. We don’t blend our honey from different regions or floral sources, so each bottle of our honey is unique to its specific time and place. We harvest our honey once a year in August, when wild thyme honey is at its peak.
What Countries Does Life of a Beekeeper Ship to?
Life of a Beekeeper currently ships only to Greece. If your location is not within Greece, please contact us, as we do have international shipping available at an extra cost for postage and handling.Do You Sell Honey Wholesale?
